Day 1 – Creating Motivating Learning Environments for Children with Complex Needs
Learning Objectives
Active Learning vs. Passive Learning
- Discuss the history and philosophy of Active Learning
- Adapt passive learning environments to active learning environments
- Understand the dynamic learning circle and the role disability plays in disrupting this process
- Identify strategies to encourage developmental learning, including the role of play
Active Learning Equipment and Tools
- Discuss the benefits of Active Learning Perceptual Aids including the Little Room, the HOPSA-dress, and the Support Bench
- Increase knowledge to facilitate skills in spatial relations, object concept, increased muscle strength, weight bearing, unsupported sitting, standing, and walking
Day 2 – Social Emotional Development and Assessment to Curriculum
Learning Objectives
- Understanding and identifying the emotional and intellectual levels of children with complex needs.
- Identifying the role of the adult in promoting skill development.
- Using the Five Phases of Educational Treatment to facilitate learning and emotional development.
- Assessing a child’s developmental level using the Functional Scheme Assessment.
- Establishing a rich and appropriate Active Learning curriculum including how the FIELA Curriculum can be used.
- Developing IEP goals emphasizing Active Learning strategies.
